The First Trip?
Several years ago, during the break between summer and fall semesters, I
was working the circulation desk alone. I first noticed an older man
(about 50) and 2 younger boys (about 18 & 16) approaching the second of
our 2 electric entrance doors.
It was obvious that dad was "showing the
kids around campus." When I picked up on them, dad had just stepped on
the mat which activates the electric doors. The doors opened. The group
stepped back as if unsure of how to proceed. Another patron pushed past
them and entered the building. They followed, carefully examining the
arch of the doors.
They then entered the section we have railed off
around the entrance which has a one-way locking gate. (It looks something
like a corral with the electric doors at the back and the gate at the
front. This is to keep patrons from leaving via the entrance doors.) The
preceding patron had gone on. Dad and the boys stood there as if at a
loss what to do. Another patron went around them and through the gate.
They followed him through, again examining the mechanism of the gate.
At
that time several feet to the right of the entrance we had a beautiful
old double-sided stand-up display case. The group headed for it, dad
leading, boys in tow. They carefully examined both sides, but obviously
did not find what they were looking for. Not one of them had uttered a
word to this point. In the center of our lobby, we have a black cube
which is our directory. They approached this and after looking it over
for a few seconds, the dad said, "Boys, 'is builden's got *6* floors."
At that, they wandered around the corner and out of sight.
