Don't know if this comes under the heading of scary story... but
I worked at the Santa Barbara Public Library with a library assistant
who had worked in a public library in Hawaii. He said that
many of the local superstitions (and there are many) seemed to invade
the workplace. At one time a series of unfortunate events began occuring
to various members of the staff of this library-the events occuring in
quick succession.
One staff member was killed in a bad automobile accident. Another was
robbed. Another became seriously ill. I can't remember all of the
details, but there was some pretty bad stuff going on. The rest of the
staff was getting very uneasy and so they decided to call in a kahuna-a
witch doctor. They actually hired a witch doctor! Apparently this isn't
all that unusual in Hawaii.
The witch doctor arrived and did a walkabout the office. He said
that there was very bad energy in the office. He said he could "see
blood covering everything." He performed some type of cleansing ritual
involving rattles and smoke and after that no further incidents occurred.
I wish I could remember all of the embellishments to this story that
were provided. But it was more than 11 years ago and memory fails me.
But I often think of this story when our library staff becomes moody,
and tensions begin to rise and there almost seems to be dark cloud over
everyone's head. I wish we had a kahuna to get rid of the bad vibes!
