Uncle Miltie
Here in the Catalog Dept. of Moody Library, Baylor University, we have had
some odd things going on for years--tables being moved overnight,
typewriters being moved, materials on desks being moved, the online system
doing weird & strange things, papers disappearing and then mysteriously
reappearing days later.
We jokingly blame it on Uncle Miltie. Miltie was
a big-time donor to the university, and after he died and was cremated, his
family donated the money for a small garden area which we can see through
the library windows, just outside the Catalog Dept. It's very nice, with
benches, wisteria vines trailing from brick posts which have inscriptions
from the classics inscribed in marble.
Miltie's ashes are also buried in the
area, under a bronze marker, a fact that many students who have picnic
lunches in the garden don't seem to realize. We blame everything that goes
wrong in the Catalog Dept. on poor Uncle, and the screensaver on our dept.
Mac displays messages supposedly from him. What can I say--we're easily
entertained.
