The Old Man
I have often experienced a strong feeling of peace and welcome at
the Missouri Botanical Garden here. The Garden was founded by Henry
Shaw, who was buried on the grounds. I don't know if this feeling,
which only comes when I visit the Garden alone and when it's not
crowded is simply the beauty of the surroundings or a welcome from
The Old Man. Oh, yes, he does count as a library ghost, doesn't he?
Part of the library at the Garden was once kept in a building which
used to be his town house (moved to the Garden after his death).
When a huge tract of the garden was torn up to build the Japanese
Garden, people who worked in the town house kept hearing knocks on
their doors. Several of them testified to opening the door and
seeing an image of the Old Man, very agitated and gesturing wildly
in the direction of the construction. I don't know if he's been
seen since.
